In August 1957, S. R. (Bob) Spann moved with his family from Columbia, SC to Myrtle Beach. He partnered with three prominent local businessmen (Archie Dargan, Morrison Campbell and Craig Wall, Jr.) to purchase Ammons, Inc., a company specializing in the sales and service of Frigidaire appliances and heating systems installation. The firm consisted of around 7 employees.
The new company immediately decided to add roofing and sheet metal to its services and hired its first roofing employee Bud Nobles.
In 1959, the company moved from a rental building on Broadway Extension to a new facility at 706 8th Ave North, behind what was then M.B. Lumber Company.
In 1968, Spann Inc. sold off the appliance section of the business to better focus its efforts on the expansion of HVAC and roofing segments of the operations.
In 1973, S. R. (Sammy) Spann Jr. joined Spann, Inc. after graduating from Clemson University and serving a tour in the United States Air Force.
In 1975, Spann Roofing moved to a new facility at 705 Seaboard Street in the Seaboard Industrial Park. On February 1, 1978, S.R. Spann Sr. retired and Fred L. Thomas became president of the company.
The HVAC segment of the business was spun off in 1979 into what is today known as Thomas, Inc. S.R. Spann Jr. became president of Spann, Inc. and later changed its name to Spann Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc to better reflect the services provided.
As the company continued to grow, the facilities at Seaboard Street seemed inadequate for future growth. A new state-of-the-art warehouse and office were constructed in the Atlantic Center, just west of Myrtle Beach. This facility consists of 20,000 square feet and is filled with the highest quality technological equipment, materials, supplies and employees, all committed to providing excellent results. The building took occupancy on January 1, 2002. The new facility is more centrally located in the county and more accessible to a road system that has allowed the company to expand its geographic area of coverage.
